White - Still Making a Big Color Impact in 2013

You don't have to go far to find blog posts about the 2013 color of the year.  It's starting to show up everywhere.  I love Emerald Green, but think white is going to have a great year also.  Why white, why now?  Well, the right white can transform a space.  It's fresh and extremely versatile.  Once you get comfortable using white paint the right way, it will become one of your favorite design staples.

Use some of these tricks from designers of the African American Top 20
to make a smooth transition into your unforgettable white space.

Family Room By Michel Boyd
In this family room designed by Michel Boyd, the walls were left white while the ceiling was infused with a pop of color.  This is one of my favorite applications!  The ceiling color was pulled from the
pillow fabric and ties the room together perfectly.

There are so many amazing fabrics out there that make a statement on their own.  Boyd used this lovely floral print to add interest to his white reading nook.

 Dining Room By Anishka Clarke
This space designed by Anishka Clarke allows the artwork and dining chairs to be the focus of the area.
No additional color needed.

This image by Darryl Carter shows the basic difference between crisp white walls and builder beige.
Look at how the light just bounces around inside the entire room.
Take special note of the dark floors.  When choosing white walls,
remember to go as dark as possible on the flooring.

What do you think?  Are you willing to give it try?  Leave a comment below and let me know.

  1. I think it works wonderfully. It looks clean, light, and airy with just the right burst of color and patterns to surprise you. I love how the pillows pull from the ceiling as you said. I would have never noticed that. Great work!

  2. I have been going back and forth about painting my bedroom white because I want the contrast for a black upholstered bed. Trying to convince my hubs that white is a color too! I love the white on white in the family room...so sophisticates.

  3. Love white! Painted my condo white a few years ago. Over the years, it had been every color in the book and so I took it back to basics. Love the examples shown here, and am so not sure about all this fawning over Emerald green. I love emerald (it's my birth stone) but I'm not exactly running around pitching that shade to clients right now but we'll see. Happy hump day.

  4. I love white! Sometimes it's overlooked (as the sister sophisticate mentioned) but if your walls are white that means you get to have fun colored furniture and decor that wouldn't necessarily go with other wall colors. Clean and crisp - I love it.
