"If You Haven't Read it, It's Still News"

During a staff meeting while I was an elementary school art teacher, one of the new hires asked, "Does it get boring teaching the same thing every year?"  One of the older teachers replied, "The information is always old, the students and the way you deliver it, now that's what's new.  That's where the excitement is!"  I've mentally held on to that piece of knowledge since then with a very tight grip.  As I strive to look at things and opportunities, I have to remind myself that although the information is old, my delivery has to be fresh and new.

Today, I did a simple makeover for my client's guest bedroom.  We used the original bed, night stand and lamp.  We then transformed the room and used new bedding and an oldie, but goodie, the sunburst mirror.  As a designer, I really didn't want to use the mirror.  I was thinking that it was over used these days, but my client absolutely loved it.  So you see, while I'm thinking it's overdone, the client who's a doctor and probably never picks up a design magazine, felt that it was perfect.

That got me to thinking.  I'm notorious for not wanting to duplicate items from client to client.  I get a little fussy when someone wants the exact thing that they saw in another person's home.  So now I have to wonder, have I been over thinking it?  Maybe there's truth after all to the saying, "If you haven't read it, it's still news."
